Nothing is more fun and rewarding than carefully choosing your favorite flowers, trees and plants and then using them in the creation of the most incredibly inspiring and breath-taking gardens and landscapes imaginable right outside your door.
It does take planning, patience, and some work, but there's no better "therapy " than to completely lose yourself in the physical, emotional, and creative outlet it provides. This more than anything else you can do, will bring you years of satisfaction and pride, as well as a wonderful respite from the pressures unpleasantness the outside world can sometimes bring.
Proper planning is important because your landscape will be around for years to come and will grow and evolve, becoming more and more beautiful with every season. Here are some of the most important things to consider before you start:
Consider your resources ( funds, time, materials) before beginning your plan.
I probably approach it a little differently than some people. I "segment" my plan and do one area of a landscape at a time, and then tie them together for great flow, texture, and color. Here's how to start:
# The first thing to do is to go to local nurseries and familiarize yourself with every plant type you intend to use. Then decide (and write down) the items you can't live without. Note their size at maturity, and other important details such as which trees will flower in the spring or give spectacular fall color (and thus lose their leaves every winter).
When it comes to flowers, you also need to know which will come back every year (perennials) and those that will only last one season (annuals). Also note which type comes in your favorite colors.
Once home, you can find these plants online to if you want to learn more. You can also purchase them online, often at a very good savings if you plan ahead.
# The next step for me is to walk the property and start visualizing my plan . (I do that every day in my own garden because I love it, and I am always looking for ways to improve it as well).
It's useful when doing the work yourself to break it down into segments, as I mentioned before, such as the entrance near the front door; maybe a corner where the fence meets your house; the parkways, etc. I only buy the plants, mulch, landscape mix, etc. I need for one area at a time.
One example is one area of my home I designed on my corner lot between my house and the street. It was fairly wide, so I put in a beautiful curved brick walk, and inside that I planted slash pine trees, ivy, and azaleas. It then created other spaces to design by giving me a couple of naturally formed beds between the walk and my fence and the walk and the house, as well as a very nice corner to work with. The corner now has a backdrop of ivy and a birdbath with an angel on top and small hedges and a flowering hot pink sage bush behind. Think "layers".
# Keep in mind how you want your home to look in every season. Think of things that would make your garden look fresh and unique, no matter what time of year. Also keep in mind your colors. Example: you might not want a brilliantly colored flower that blooms every spring to come up behind your winter pansies which would result in an unattractive color combination.
# Get ideas from the internet, other people, magazines, and by driving around in your community (especially the higher end areas where the residents have unlimited funds and therefore, often the most spectacular landscapes in your area). Take pictures to help you remember the ideas you like best, but do be discreet about possibly invading peoples' privacy.
# Be aware of the color and style of your home as you do your planning. You wouldn't want a tropical landscape design with an English cottage-type home for example.
# Plan your landscape around your intended uses for it. You might want shaded areas to sit and read, or a koi pond with a bridge for your family and visitors to enjoy, or maybe even a special area set aside for gardening chores, your family dog or growing a cutting garden. If you're on a tight budget, concentrate most on the areas where you'll be doing most of your outdoor living. Be sure to consider the space required for each area.
# Finally ... don't allow yourself to feel overwhelmed. Take your time, enjoy each and every new thing you do in your garden, and before you know it, you'll have neighbors coming over or stopping in their cars to compliment you on your new, breath-taking landscape ... all of it done by you!

Junipers and Ice Plants - A Phenomenal Plant Combination by Jonathan Yaakobi
Those of us who garden in arid climates need to be open to ideas for planting designs that look great on the one hand, and that can be maintained on a water conserving budget on the other. One such combination involves the massing of the Ice Plant (Lampranthus spectabilis) as a ground cover, with different varieties of Juniper; ranging from low growing types to landscaping shrubs and bushes of differing sizes form and shade. A part of the garden so set up should also be relatively easy to maintain, although some knowledge as to care and cultivation is necessary.
Let's take as an example, a fairly sizable area of 75 square meters. A carpet of Ice Plant in flower, covering say some 50 meters square, creates an effect that is probably unmatched in gardening. For the flowers in addition to the color they provide, have a unique textural quality that can best be described as a sort of wave. As Lampranthus cannot sustain traffic, some type of path for access should be laid down. There is no need to incur great expense as large flagstones set in the ground should suffice.
As the Ice Plant blooms for a relatively brief period in the spring, it's important to consider the visual effect throughout the year. I think it associates so well with Junipers firstly because of the compatible leaf textures between the two, and also due to the foliage color of the Ice Plant, which resembles the shade of green, typical of so many Junipers. Of course color variety and emphasis can be supplied by the careful placing of Juniper shrub varieties which have gold, bluish green or silvery grey foliage.
As the composition will lack flower color through much of the year, annual or perennial flowers can be planted in a number of decorative pots, placed strategically amongst, and billowing out of the carpet of ground cover. To maintain a controlled, low consumption irrigation regime, it is essential to provide a separate line for the flowers and for the rest of the plants. For example, in a Mediterranean climate, Lampranthus and Juniper can be grown on less than 200mm of irrigation water per year, while annual flowers require some 1000mm per year. (1000 liters per square meter per year). For this reason avoid planting flowers in the ground.
Care and cultivation
In order to bloom, Ice Plants must be grown in full sun. Flowers simply do not open in any degree of shade whatsoever. In hot climates though, Junipers will do better grown in light shade. This is best supplied by trees which have a fairly open form, as heavy shade is to be avoided. Careful pruning to establish an open habit may have to be carried out for this purpose. Furthermore, as Junipers are evergreen plants, deciduous tree species should be considered, in order to create some seasonal change, movement and dynamism.
Good drainage is the primary precondition for successfully growing these plants. To enhance soil aeration, copious quantities of compost should be added to the soil, and deep, infrequent watering is to be preferred to frequent shallow watering. Lampranthus, as a succulent does not need to be watered at all during the summer, which as it happens, is its dormant season. It is preferable therefore to plant it in the autumn and winter as opposed to the spring and summer.
Finally, while Junipers require little and in some cases no pruning, Ice Plants do need some care and attention. To avoid open and leggy growth, cut back the flowers when about 75% have been spent. Do not wait for the last flowers to wither before doing so. Take note that the plants do not rejuvenate from old wood, so pruning, which can be carried out by garden shears or a hedge trimmer, should only extend to soft, herbaceous growth.

On the other side of the world, a separate tradition in gardening arose in China, which was later passed on to the Japanese, who urbanized gardening into aristocratic landscapes in miniature sizes, surrounded by ponds. From these, the Zen temple gardens in Japan came about.
Meanwhile, 13th-century Europe gave rise to the Italian villa gardens. Parterres in France were seen around the end of the 16th century. The Dutch, who provided an offshoot of the French garden style, were advocated with more flower bulbs, water, topiary and trees in tubs, and topiary, as evident in the Westbury Court.
In the 18th, England's landscape gardens stirred new perspectives. Some garden historians look at the 18th century as a significant turnaround from the prevailing "formality" in the Renaissance Period to a "natural" perspective. Art patron Lord Burlington is credited as a key mover of the more natural style in England. Other famed peddlers of this perspective include William Kent who designed and integrated heavily calculated, elaborate vistas to statues, temples and ornaments in various English parklands.
Cottage-inspired gardening was prominent in the 19th century, known mostly for its romantic creativity. Flower gardens were dominant for homes during the 20th century.
Thereafter, gardening progressed into city development and planning. Looking around will tell you that gardens are commonly incorporated in city structures and town landscapes.
Gardens around you, great or small, formal or informal, private or public, echo their creators' passion for growing greens or for beautiful landscaping and ornament purposes, or simply to mirror their artistic side.

The loveliness of flowering plants needs little embellishment by description. Certainly every gardener seeks the beauty and color that can be brought to his grounds by a variety of flowers. The proper arrangement of flower beds in your garden and attentive care to them can insure you a continuing bloom of lovely flowers year after year. Consideration of the soil requirements for flowers and the proper use of annuals, biennials, and perennials are all discussed below.
Soil Requirements
Preparing the soil for flower beds or borders requires greater care than planting a lawn. For one thing, digging must be deeper. It is not too much to dig the bed 2 feet deep, although 1 1/2 feet is suitable. It is, of course, possible to grow flowers in a shallower bed than this, but the deeper you dig, the better your production will be.
Good loam should be used for the topsoil, e.g., well-rotted manure, humus, peat moss, well-sifted leaf mold or heavy sand. Wood ashes are fine for spring, and lime may be used for loosening the soil. You might think about the character of your soil and consider the particular fertilizer which contains the elements your soil needs most. Should you use manure, be careful not to let it touch the roots of plants.
Annuals
An annual, from the point of view of the amateur gardener, is any plant which must be replaced each year and which flowers only once in its life. Annuals generally are grown from seed. The chief advantage of annuals over perennials is their low cost. Thousands of plants can be grown from a single packet of seeds.
Annuals are also very decorative, and provide the best source of flowers for cutting. Their season of bloom is relatively long, as well. Their chief disadvantage is the late date at which they bloom. If annuals are used alone in a bed or border, a good part of the season will pass with little to show in the way of color.

Biennials are generally very beautiful plants, with most attractive flowers. I find it difficult getting along with my parents but I still like to spend time at their house. You may be wondering why. Contrary to the beliefs that such gardens are only found in the countryside, my parents actually have this in the middle of the city. Unimaginable but true. This is one of the things that surprise me often. Most of the landscaping and landscape magazines that I have seen give the impression that beautiful gardens are a possibility only on the countryside. This is obvious considering the huge plots of land people have around their houses. However, my parents' garden has changed that perspective for me. I can now imagine that these gardens can be found in the city as well.
This is not the end of the surprises I have. My parents' personalities are not at all reflected in the garden they have developed. Unlike the cool and pleasant look of their garden, my parents are the task masters who are committed to their work. They look at the garden as a project and work hard to get it to the status it is currently in. However, I doubt if they ever sit and enjoy the garden they have created. For them, every thing boild down to a systematic way of doing things and that the garden should look beautiful. I just hope they would enjoy this beautiful piece and use it sometime to lower their stress.

3.Pruning Shears - Pruning shears are scissors for plants. They have a long handles and blades which allow gardeners to precisely prune rose bushes and other plants. They are perfect when all you need is landscaping in a small garden. They can also be used to cut the weeds at the edges of garden beds and those hard to reach places. They are good for trimming the dead leaves or wood off of flowers. This is probably the most important piece of equipment that you will buy. Invest in good quality pruning shears. Good ones will last a lifetime.
4.Wheelbarrow - Even when landscaping for small gardens you're going to be carrying around some heavy stuff. Sacks of soil and mulch, new plants and landscaping stones all will "put a hurtin'" on your back if you're not careful. A wheelbarrow is one piece of garden equipment I would not do without. You've seen one. It is a cart with a handle and at least one wheel. Buying a good quality wheelbarrow will save you a lot of time and effort and Will save your back. Remember this is suppose to be relaxing and fun. Wheelbarrows are expensive but worth every penny.
If you have a riding lawnmower, consider a small cart to pull behind it in place of the wheelbarrow. I wouldn't recommend buying one for a small yard but if you have a riding lawnmower, you probably don't have a small yard anyway.
5. Gloves - Feeling the fresh soil run though your fingers is wonderful -- at first. After a couple of hours it is painful. Not to mention the possibility of blisters using the tools. Get some gloves. Just get the cheap cloth ones. As they get caked with dirt, throw them in the washer or, better yet, throw them away.
There are many other pieces of gardening equipment that you may want to consider as you do your landscaping and gardening. But the five listed above are the essentials. Invest in these high quality tools now and your new hobby will be both fun and relaxing. Whether you continue to just do landscaping for small gardens or tackle the entire backyard, they will always serve you well.
